Drager Evita Infinity V500 Upgraded

Dräger Medical has released an update to its Evita Infinity V500 ventilator that provides new functions like variable pulmonary pressure, SmartCare/PS application for better management of weaning off of the device, and a few touches to make workflow easier for clinicians. The system also uses RFID chips tagged onto breathing tubes that can transfer device settings when moving a patient from one ventilator to another.

Spontaneous breaths are subject to natural changes. The Variable Pressure Support option responds to these minute fluctuations of spontaneous breathing by varying the pressure support and thereby varying the tidal volume as well. Study data has shown that this can reduce the risk of lung damage.1 In addition to expanded therapeutic options, the software update with the Smart Pulmonary View application also offers simplified information options for the clinical staff. A lung symbol visualizes lung compliance changes and airway resistance in real-time.

This Really Smart Phone Takes ECG Readings

The doctor is in . . . your pocket. That may soon be a reality for people with a cardiovascular condition. A German company has developed a mobile phone that provides a quick and simple way to measure, record and dispatch electrocardiogram (ECG) readings to a doctor or hospital. It will be available in Europe later this year.

The Handy sana from Medical Marketing Berlin GmbH (MMB GmbH) looks a lot like an iPhone and has the usual smart phone features. What makes it unique is an application called Heart Suite. This app allows the user to take his or her ECG instantly and relay the data to a doctor or qualified medical professional. To operate, the user places two fingers against the edge of the phone for 30 seconds. The data is then whisked away to a designated monitor in an xml file.

The Future of Connected Health

To succeed in today's market, medical devices not only have to incorporate the latest technology, they also must have the ability to treat patients in the safest and most affordable fashion. A number of efforts in this area are underway, including the movement for "connected health," which requires medical devices to be able to communicate with other devices or systems in the expanding and remote health care arena. In a recent interview, Medtech Insight spoke about the changing environment with Pamela McNamara, president of US operations at Cambridge Consultants Inc. She notes that a medical device is only a single component in a much larger system of operation, and manufacturers need to develop and improve products with that in mind.
