No more needle pricks for patients getting their hemoglobin (Hgb) checked. Masimo has announced the limited worldwide release of its Pronto-7 hand-held device for spot-check testing of Hgb in <1 minute -- enabling clinicians to detect anemia without resorting to vampirism. The Pronto-7 device is about the size of a deck of index cards (5.1"x2.8"x1"), weighs 10.5 oz, and will eventually be capable of wireless transmission of patient data to designated health facilities. Masimo received EU's CE Mark but has yet to obtain FDA approval.
